Winter Lawn Care Tips for a Healthy Lawn in the Spring

Keep up your yard with our winter lawn care tips.Taking care of your yard is a year-long task. As with most maintenance, there will be busy seasons and low seasons. Make sure to keep up with your lawn care throughout the year to maintain its ongoing health. This continued maintenance can also help you save money and time in the future from more serious support.

Winter lawn care is much less intense than the care it needs during spring, summer, and fall. Even after the warmer months, keep your yard strong with our winter lawn care tips.

1. Aerate and Fertilize

Before your area gets its first frost, set a time to aerate your lawn. Aeration acts as a kickstart to improve your lawn’s breathing. Soil compaction can slow the growth of your lawn and may lead to patches discoloring while they struggle to get the nutrients they need. After opening up your lawn through aeration, add in some fertilizer to double down on encouraging your lawn’s winter protection. The root system of your grass will hang onto the nutrients offered through fertilizers. Look for fertilizer specially made for the cold season.

2. Make Sure to Clear Your Lawn

When the temperature changes quickly between above and below freezing, there may be some wet spots. These wet spots can lead to disease and further problems in your lawn. Take the time to clear the fall leaves from your lawn. These piles could choke your lawn even before winter sets in for the season. After the weather turns cold, take a few trips around your yard to clear away any bigger leaves, branches, toys, lawn furniture, and more off your lawn.

3. Walk on the Path

Frozen does not mean stronger. When your lawn goes into its sleep mode during the winter, try to walk on a sidewalk or stone steps. Try not to walk on your lawn as much as you can. Even the most robust grass becomes weak if you walk the same path over and over.

4. Be Smart About Ice Treatment

Salting your sidewalks, paths, and stairs is important, especially for older people or people with injuries. Make sure to check the label for salt products that will not hurt your lawn. Look for any indicators for protections in the salt for your lawn, yard, or the environment.
