Lawn Fertilization / Care

With the right lawn fertilization tactics, our experts can give your landscapes a new lease of life. Sometimes, regular lawn fertilizer just won't do the trick. That's why we use a custom-blended granular slow-release fertilizer that provides nutrients and added moisture right into the root system. This results in a healthier lawn that’s characterized by stronger grass blades that deliver a greener, richer, longer-lasting yard.

Our season-long lawn care services also include weed control, hydration, mowing, and grub prevention to ensure that the benefits are enjoyed for the long haul.

Lawn Aeration / Seeding

Healthy lawns need a chance to breathe! Core aeration is essential to ensuring a healthy, green lawn. Our specialized lawn aeration services will reduce thatch buildup and break up compacted soil while also allowing air, water, and fertilizers to get deep into the root system. Our specialized machines extract small soil plugs and cores from the lawn, providing consistent aeration across the entire landscape.

When combined with our overseeding and silt seeding services, it is possible to rebuild or replace heavily damaged lawns, too. Soil compaction can be a daunting task for homeowners, but the professionals here at Independent Lawn Services make it look easy. With us, a lush and long-lasting result is guaranteed.

LAWN SERVICE FAQs

When is the best time to aerate my lawn?

Due to the cooler climate here in Michigan, your lawn is most likely made up of cool season grass. That means that lawn aeration is best done in late summer or early fall to prepare your grass for the winter, or in early spring before the ground fully thaws. This strengthens your lawn's roots and prepares your grass for healthy growth in the spring.

How often should I aerate my lawn?

We suggest aerating your lawn at least annually, if not twice a year. If you're not sure whether your lawn needs to be aerated, inspect your yard for compacted soil, stressed grass, or puddling water after rainfall. These are all signs of soil compaction, which means it is time to aerate.

Another way to check if it's time to aerate your lawn is with the screwdriver test. Grab any screwdriver you own with at least a six-inch shaft, and try to plunge it into the soil. If you are able to easily drive the screwdriver into the ground, this indicates sufficient soil moisture. If you meet resistance, aerating is the way to go!

When should I fertilize my lawn?

When to fertilize your lawn in Michigan depends on when the first frost has thawed! There is no use fertilizing the frozen ground, but you don't want to wait too long for the soil to warm up so weeds can germinate. It is generally agreed upon that your lawn's first fertilization should come in March or April to help your grass recover from winter stress and fight off crabgrass growth.

Independent Lawn Care's season-long fertilization program includes six regular applications of premium slow-release granular fertilizer throughout the year.

What does lawn fertilization do?

Fertilizer ensures your grass gets all of the nutrients it needs to stay lush and green. Those nutrients strengthen the grass's roots, which helps those roots quickly absorb water (avoiding puddles and mushy patches), protect themselves from pests and disease, and shield themselves from bad weather.

Our custom-made, slow-release fertilizer feeds your grass for longer, ensuring a more beautiful yard that lasts throughout the year.

Your lawn needs fertilization just as much as it needs sunlight and water. Contact us today to set up your lawn fertilization appointment!

What is thatch buildup? How do I remove it from my yard?

Thatch is a loose layer of dead and living roots, leaves, stems, and organic plant material that lies directly on top of the soil layer. While a thin layer of thatch is a normal component of your yard and can even benefit your lawn, a thick layer of thatch can be detrimental.

Some of the problems that thatch can cause are:

  • A spongy, wet lawn
  • Shallow root systems that prevent grass from digging deep into the soil to look for water
  • Pest infestations and fungus growth
  • Blockages of water and fertilizers, making your grass vulnerable to heat and drought
  • An overaccumulation of water, suffocating your grass

Thick thatch can be maintained and eliminated with proper and regular aeration. Independent Lawn Service's professionals can keep your yard healthy and thatch free. Contact us today!

What kind of pests can you get rid of?

We can eliminate everything from mosquitoes to moles to chinch bugs. We have the tools to eliminate destructive white grubs, chinch bugs, billbugs (part of the weevil family), sod webworms, crane flies and leatherjackets, and cranberry girdlers.

Grub damage can happen fast and infestations are no joke. If you aren't sure what sort of lawn damage you are looking at, check out our page all about these common Southeast Michigan lawn pests. After over two decades of ridding Southeast Michigan lawns of pesky pests, grubs, and bugs, we are the top choice for all lawn pest management!

Why should I use a professional lawn care company?

Hiring a professional lawn care company means you are hiring specialists who know exactly what your lawn needs to be beautiful and healthy. You can be sure that we are highly educated on a variety of topics, from when it's best to fertilize to how to get rid of pests. Improper lawn care like overwatering and underwatering can cause serious harm to your lawn.
