  • Pulsating Sprinklers: This type of sprinkler shoots strong bursts of water horizontally. The high speed is meant to cut through the wind to deliver water where you need it.
  • Sprinklers from the Hose: These ease-to-ease sprinkler systems attach to your hose. These are better for smaller lawns. There are many different specific choices of hose-end sprinklers.
  • In-Ground Sprinklers: In-ground sprinklers pop up from your yard to deliver water to your lawn without you needing to do any work after the initial installation. This type tends to be the most efficient. 

When to Time Your Lawn Watering

A general rule is the less green your lawn looks, especially if it is gray or dull green, it is thirsty. Another test is to walk on your lawn. Look for your lawn to spring back after being compressed. 

Try to water your lawn in the morning, if possible, before 10  a.m. This time of day is cooler, and the shadows tend to be greater, both factors will lead to better water absorption. If you miss the morning, try to hit it with some water between 4 and 6 p.m., so it has a chance to dry before darkness comes. Most lawns in Michigan won’t need extreme watering.

How Much Should You Water Your Lawn

Aim to water the top half a foot of soil. Lawns typically need about 1 inch of water per week from all sources. Any more water, and you will risk bringing disease to your lawn. Standing water, especially during the summer, becomes a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Make sure to check the weather so you don’t water your lawn just before a storm.
